Fifa has launched an investigation into the violent scenes that erupted after Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina, with several Argentine players facing potential suspensions.

Following the final whistle, Nahuel Molina allegedly struck Spain captain Rodri in the stomach as he ran onto the pitch. According to the Guardian, a mass confrontation also broke out near the halfway line, where Leandro Paredes appeared to grab Eric García by the throat before throwing Gavi to the ground. Paredes was shown a red card after the match by referee Slavko Vinčić, who had already sent off Enzo Fernández late in normal time. Three other Argentina players and head coach Lionel Scaloni were also booked during the final.

In a statement, Fifa confirmed it has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate possible breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code related to the post-match incidents.

The governing body is also investigating Argentina’s conduct after their semi-final victory over England, where players celebrated with a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, reportedly smuggled into Atlanta Stadium by supporters. As FIFA prohibits political messages during competitions, those involved could face further disciplinary action.
