As heatwaves become more frequent and intense due to climate change, health experts are urging parents to take extra precautions to protect babies and young children from heat-related illnesses.
Doctors say children are more vulnerable to extreme heat than adults because their bodies overheat more quickly. Young children sweat less, have a faster metabolism and absorb heat more easily, putting them at greater risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion.
Experts advise parents to watch for warning signs such as fewer wet nappies, no tears when crying, unusual tiredness, flushed skin and irritability. For infants, offering smaller feeds more frequently can help maintain hydration.
To stay safe, children should avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day whenever possible. They should wear loose, light-coloured clothing, apply sunscreen regularly and drink plenty of fluids. Water-rich fruits such as watermelon and strawberries can also help keep them hydrated.
Doctors also warn parents not to cover baby strollers with blankets or cloths to block the sun, as this can trap heat and reduce airflow, making the inside much hotter. Instead, they recommend using the stroller’s built-in canopy and checking metal parts before use, as they can become hot enough to burn a child’s skin.
Another crucial reminder is never to leave a child alone inside a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside cars can rise rapidly, even when parked in the shade or with windows slightly open. Parents are also encouraged to check that car seats and metal buckles are not too hot before placing a child inside.
Health experts say outdoor play remains important for children’s healthy growth and development, but taking simple precautions during periods of extreme heat can significantly reduce the risk of serious illness.
