UIU Aerial Robotics Team (UART) of United International University has secured fourth place globally at the Student Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) 2026 Competition in Oklahoma, United States, marking a significant achievement for Bangladesh.

Participating in the international competition for the first time, UART secured the position in the final round held from 14–17 September, 2026, at Skyway Range in Tulsa, Oklahoma, according to the press release.

The four-day competition brought together teams from universities and higher education institutions around the world.

Despite challenging weather conditions, including high winds and temperature-related difficulties, UART demonstrated its technological, engineering and operational capabilities to secure fourth place globally.

UIU said the result marked the first time a Bangladeshi team had achieved such a position in the history of the SUAS Competition.

Organised annually since 2003, the SUAS Competition is an international student competition focused on unmanned aerial systems.

A total of 81 teams from different countries participated in the preliminary stage of this year’s competition, with 67 advancing to the final flying competition.

Of them, 64 teams received flight-readiness approval, while 58 ultimately conducted flights.

Participating teams faced challenging conditions because of adverse weather, with high winds and temperature-related difficulties contributing to crashes involving 21 teams during flight operations.

Despite the conditions, UART successfully completed its mission through real-time strategic adjustments and technical adaptations, eventually securing fourth place globally.

Teams from universities around the world participated in the competition, including Cornell University, Monash University, The Ohio State University, the University of Maryland and Warsaw University of Technology.

Competing alongside these international teams, UART represented Bangladesh and secured fourth place – an achievement UIU described as significant for the country’s higher education, research and technological capabilities.

UART achieved full marks in the Safety Inspection and Rapid Response categories.

UIU also said its team was the only one to complete the mission fully autonomously.

The achievement followed a long-term collaborative effort involving research, system design, engineering development, construction, testing, experimentation and continuous refinement.

The autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle developed by the team incorporates capabilities including autonomous navigation, aerial mapping, object detection, payload delivery, obstacle detection and avoidance, and multiple safety mechanisms.

The integrated application of these technologies enabled the team to complete its mission successfully under difficult environmental conditions.

UIU said the achievement demonstrated what could be accomplished through a combination of institutional support, faculty guidance, student talent and long-term technological development.

The university said the result could also inspire future generations to pursue larger ambitions in engineering, robotics and technology while demonstrating Bangladesh’s capabilities on the global stage.
