Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) in Sylhet celebrated “Korean Cultural Day 2026” on Wednesday (28 October) through a day-long programme at the university’s Muktamancha.

The event was organised by the KOICA Bangladesh Office in collaboration with Sust, featuring cultural performances, a Taekwondo demonstration, quizzes, games and exhibitions showcasing Korean culture.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest, Sust Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Khairul Islam said such initiatives help students broaden their understanding of the world beyond classrooms and textbooks. Highlighting the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and South Korea, he said cultural exchange was a natural way to strengthen ties between nations.

He added that Korea’s development journey could inspire young people by demonstrating how dedication, discipline and education can bring positive change. He also urged students to uphold honesty, participate in anti-corruption activities and make proper use of educational and training opportunities.

Sust Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr G M Robiul Islam and KOICA Bangladesh Office Country Director Jeon Kim attended the programme as special guests. A photo session followed the inaugural speeches.

The day’s attractions included a Taekwondo demonstration by the Bangladesh Taekwondo Federation, an open quiz on KOICA and Korean films, and various cultural games. Exhibition booths on Korean culture, traditional Korean painting activities and a photo booth also drew students and visitors.

The programme concluded at 2:30pm with a closing and certificate distribution ceremony. Certificates were presented to university volunteers, while KOICA Bangladesh Office Deputy Country Director Seong Ki-hun delivered the closing remarks.

The event aimed to strengthen friendship between Bangladesh and South Korea and introduce Korean culture to students.

Deans of various faculties, the registrar, the director of student counselling and guidance, heads of offices and departments, members of the proctorial body, teachers, students, officers and employees of the university attended the event.
