Arif Hasnat, a graduate from Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), secured full PhD scholarships from 12 prestigious US universities, despite graduating with a low CGPA of 2.71.
Arif emphasised thoroughly researching target institutions and understanding their specific requirements. While talking to media, he explained, “Maintaining a high GPA is important, but understanding the specific requirements of target institutions is equally crucial.”
His CGPA was a significant obstacle, especially in RUET’s civil engineering department, where less than 30% of students achieved a GPA above 3.00.
Faced with this academic reality, Arif moved to research early in his undergraduate years. With little guidance, he sought help from senior Faysal Ibne Rahman and relied on online resources to hone his research skills.
His breakthrough came in his final year, when his research efforts caught the attention of Professor HM Rasel, leading to further publications and recognition.
Despite failing his first GRE attempt and having to complete a short semester, Arif persevered. The second GRE attempt ended in success.
Arif began emailing professors at US universities back in 2021. After contacting over 1,200 professors, he received positive responses from more than 30.
Though his low CGPA posed challenges, he got into four universities with full funding: Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the University of Texas at Arlington, Lamar University, and the University of Louisville.
There were two other universities where he was accepted: Clemson University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Reflecting on his journey, Arif advises future applicants to utilise online resources and tailor their applications to highlight their strengths. He emphasised hard work, consistency, and self-belief as the key to success. Arif would soon join Southern Illinois University Carbondale as a PhD student.
