Omelette and Mumlette are two brothers. Freshly released from their mother’s belly, they reminisce about their destiny. For some time now inflation has kept brothers like them stuck in the crates of shops, their smooth shells gently tapping against each other as they dreamed of the day they’d be cracked open and transformed into something delicious.
As the prices are going down, people are once again using them in all types of recipes
“I hope I get to be a sunny-side-up” said Omelette adding, “I love the way the white is soft and the yolk is centred, a picturesque pose.”
“Oh, I’d rather be mixed with chopped veggies and chillies,” Mumlette replied. “I love the idea of being all fluffy and adorned with colourful vegetables.”
As they talked, they felt a strange sensation. The crate was moving! They peeked out through a tiny crack and saw a hand reaching for them.
A bright light flooded the eggs’ world. As they were about to embark on a delicious adventure, the eggs quickly realised they were not inside a conventional kitchen. Omelette and Mumlette’s excitement turned to dread as they realised they weren’t going to be cooked after all. Instead, they found themselves in a strange, cold place crowded with other eggs.
“What’s going on?” Mumlette asked, his voice trembling. “Aren’t we supposed to be in the kitchen?” “I don’t know,” Omelette replied, his yolk quivering. “But it doesn’t look good.”
They saw a sea of blue police uniforms surrounding them, they soon realised they were at the hands of an angry mob. They could hear chatter around them as people kept shouting insults at some other people, and soon they realised what was going to happen to them.
“We’re going to be used as weapons!” Omelette whispered to Momlette. “To be thrown at the politician.”
“Oh no,” Momlette said, his eyes filling with tears. “I don’t want to be a weapon. I just want to be a delicious dish.”
The raged protesters separated the two brothers. Amongst the chaos, the brothers did not even get the chance to say goodbye. The life of an egg had been very simple up till now. Freshly prepared, loved by all. Who knew they would become the weapon of choice to demonstrate hate and anger?
The innocent brothers never anticipated this outcome, yet they were the sufferers of injustice without any wrongdoing. Their innocent lives were made a mess, their hopes and dreams shattered, and all they could do is bear witness; witness to the fact that their sacrifice has brought them the highest honour as a symbol of emancipatory anger. No amount of mixing with vegetables could have bestowed them with this level of honour of being hurled at accused murderers.
