BDOAA 2026 national round held at IUB
The Bangladesh Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (BDOAA) 2026 National Round was successfully held at Independent University Bangladesh on April 18, bringing together young astronomy enthusiasts from across the country.
Around 300 participants took part in the national event, selected from more than 1,200 students who competed in regional rounds across eight regions of Bangladesh. The programme featured academic competitions, scientific discussions, and interactive learning sessions.
The event was graced by IUB Vice-Chancellor Professor M Tamim as chief guest. Among the distinguished attendees were Professor M Arshad Momen, Director of the Office of Graduate Studies, Research and Industry Relations; Dr Habib Bin Muzaffar, Acting Dean of the School of Engineering, Technology and Sciences; and Dr Rifat Ara Rouf, Head of the Department of Physical Sciences.
A key highlight of the event was a public lecture titled “How Fast is the Universe Expanding?” delivered by astrophysicist Syed Ashraf Uddin, followed by an interactive question-and-answer session with participants.
The programme concluded with the BDOAA 2026 prize-giving ceremony, where winners across the Senior, Junior, Open, and Poster Competition categories were recognised. The Olympiad aims to nurture young scientific talent in Bangladesh and prepare students for participation in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics.
The celebrations continued with “Astronomy Night 14”, organised by Durbin, featuring digital simulations and optical telescope observations on the IUB rooftop, allowing participants to explore the night sky firsthand.
Organised by BDOAA under the Centre for Astronomy, Space Science and Astrophysics (CASSA), in collaboration with the Department of Physical Sciences at IUB, the event aimed to foster curiosity, scientific engagement, and a shared passion for astronomy among the next generation of learners.
The Business Standard served as the print and online media partner, while TBS Graduates joined the programme as the youth engagement partner.
