DUET hosts workshop on use of AI tools in academic result preparation

A workshop titled “AI tools and result preparation in academia” was held on Sunday (11 May) at Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Gazipur, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence in course and programme outcome mapping for capacity building in higher education.

VC Sir’s Speech

The workshop was organised by the university’s Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). The Vice-Chancellor of DUET, Professor Dr Mohammad Julhas Uddin Ahmed, attended the programme as the chief guest.

Professor Dr Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Rasel, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of East West University, delivered the keynote address. Another keynote speaker was Khondaker Rashidul Arefin, General Manager (Systems and Services, Network and Infrastructure Cell) of the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN). Abu Naser Md Nafiz, Manager of the Innovation Cell at BdREN, was also present as a keynote speaker.

In his address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Julhas Uddin Ahmed said that international recognition of Bangladeshi engineering degrees has improved following Bangladesh’s accession as a signatory to the Washington Accord. This has expanded global employment opportunities for Bangladeshi engineers. He emphasised that the use of AI tools in the accreditation process of engineering programmes has become essential to effectively utilise these opportunities.

He added that artificial intelligence and machine learning have significantly simplified the process of course and programme outcome mapping in academia. The knowledge gained from the workshop, he said, would help DUET strengthen implementation across departments and enhance collaboration with national and international universities, research institutions and industries. He noted that such efforts would contribute to improvements in education, research, publications, innovation, rankings and employment, positioning DUET as a leading global institution.

Professor Dr Md Obaidur Rahman, Director of IQAC at DUET, said that outcome-based education has replaced traditional result-oriented academic systems worldwide. He noted that meeting global accreditation standards requires systematic course and programme outcome mapping, which was the core focus of the workshop.

The programme began with a welcome address by Professor Dr Shafiqul Islam, Additional Director of IQAC. Deans, department heads, undergraduate course coordinators, programme self-assessment committee members and faculty members from accredited departments participated in the workshop.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the organisers.
