The School of Arts and Social Sciences at Southeast University, in collaboration with Writers Web Bangladesh, celebrated World Poetry Day 2026 with an international gathering of poets, literary personalities, researchers and students at the university’s Multipurpose Hall in Tejgaon on Thursday.

Adviser to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs Ahmed Azam Khan attended the programme as chief guest, while Chairman of the Board of Trustees Rezaul Karim was the guest of honour. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Yusuf Mahbubul Islam presided over the event.

Addressing the audience, Ahmed Azam Khan called on young people to contribute to national development by upholding the spirit of the Liberation War.

“Our freedom fighters are the best sons of the nation. We must ensure that their honour and dignity remain forever untarnished,” he said, while also praising Southeast University for its academic achievements and overall educational environment.

Among the speakers were Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Mofazzal Hossain, Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences Professor Dr Muhammad Shamsul Hoque, Dean of the School of Law Professor Dr Farhana Helal Mehtab, Writers Web Bangladesh President Abbas Faruq and Senior Vice-President Dr Gouranga Mohanta.

The celebration brought together renowned poets, literary figures and researchers from Bangladesh and nearly 15 countries across Asia, Europe, North America, Africa and Oceania, both in person and virtually.

One of the highlights of the programme was the presentation of awards to university students from across Bangladesh who won national poetry and essay competitions.

Deans, department heads, faculty members, administrative officials and students from Southeast University and other higher education institutions also attended the event.

The programme featured poetry recitations, literary discussions and international literary exchanges, highlighting the universal appeal of poetry and promoting cultural understanding and unity.
