The Department of Environmental Science at Stamford University Bangladesh marked World Environment Day 2026 by organising an awareness rally and a tree-planting programme on its campus, aiming to promote environmental conservation, sustainable development, and climate change awareness among students and the wider community.

The programme was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Sharif Nafe As-Saber, while Agriculture Secretary Dr Rafiqul I Mohamed attended as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Rafiqul highlighted the crucial role educational institutions play in environmental protection. He urged students to go beyond classroom learning and actively contribute to addressing environmental challenges.

“The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident. Therefore, there is no alternative to environmental awareness and responsible behaviour,” he said.

He also noted that young people can play a significant role in building a sustainable future through tree planting, responsible use of natural resources, and the adoption of environmentally friendly lifestyles.

The programme was moderated by Professor Dr Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder, while welcoming remarks were delivered by Mahmuda Islam.

The university’s registrar, proctor, deans of various faculties, faculty members, and a large number of students also participated in the event.

Activities began with an awareness rally, where participants carried banners and placards promoting environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable living. The rally was followed by a tree-planting campaign on the university premises, during which several species, including Jarul and Amla trees, were planted.

University authorities said the initiative was intended to enhance greenery on campus and create a more environmentally friendly learning environment.

In his remarks, Professor Dr Sharif Nafe As-Saber described the Earth as a shared home for all humanity and stressed the importance of collective action in supporting environmental protection and sustainable development.

He also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to transforming Stamford University Bangladesh into a green campus.

The programme concluded with a collective call for greater environmental stewardship and stronger collaborative efforts to ensure a sustainable and liveable planet for future generations.
