The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) administration has suspended two Chhatra Dal leaders from academic activities for four semesters over the alleged assault of a student following a complaint about the quality of food at Shah Paran Hall’s canteen.

The decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting yesterday (21 July), the university said in a press release signed by Registrar Syed Salim Mohammad Abdul Quadir.

The suspended students are Hasibur Rahman, communication secretary of the SUST unit of Chhatra Dal and a 2021-22 session student of the Political Studies department, and Tarek Rahman, joint office secretary of the unit and a student of the Statistics department from the same session.

In addition to the academic suspension, both students have been barred from entering the campus during the suspension period.

The syndicate also cancelled Tarek Rahman’s residential seat at Shah Paran Hall and declared him permanently ineligible to apply for accommodation in any university residential hall in the future.

The university’s action comes two days after the central Chhatra Dal expelled Hasibur Rahman and Tarek Rahman from their party posts on Sunday (19 July) for violating organisational discipline.

The case stems from an incident on Saturday (18 July), when the two leaders allegedly assaulted Khairul Khandaker in front of the university’s main gate after he complained about the quality of food at Shah Paran Hall’s canteen. Students have been protesting on campus since Sunday, demanding punishment for the two leaders.
