Professor Dr Md Nurul Islam has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU).

The Ministry of Education issued a gazette notification on Saturday following approval from President and JU Chancellor Mohammed Shahabuddin.

Under the notification, Nurul Islam has been relieved of his position as Vice Chancellor of Dhaka Central University and appointed JU VC under Section 11(1) of the Jahangirnagar University Order, 1973.

He will serve for four years from the date of joining or until his retirement, whichever comes first.

He will receive the salary and allowances equivalent to those of his current position, along with other benefits applicable to the post.

The notification also requires the new VC to reside on the university campus full-time.

The President and Chancellor may cancel the appointment at any time, according to the notification.

Nurul Islam joined Dhaka Central University as its VC on 1 April 2026.

He previously served as a professor in JU’s Department of Geography and Environment and as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of National University.
