Smart living: A new lifestyle for a changing Bangladesh
The idea of smart living in Bangladesh is no longer limited to owning the latest gadgets or having faster internet at home. Today, smart living is shaping the way people cook, travel, manage money, and even plan for the future.
In many urban households, smart consumer electronics are already becoming part of daily life. Air conditioners can now adjust temperatures automatically to save electricity. Refrigerators help families manage food storage more efficiently, while smart ovens and app-controlled appliances make everyday tasks quicker and easier. Modern apartments are also gradually introducing IoT-based systems where lighting, security, and energy usage can be monitored through smartphones.
At the same time, this transformation is not limited to major cities alone. Across rural Bangladesh, digital habits are changing lifestyles in practical ways. Farmers are using smartphones to check weather forecasts before harvesting crops, compare market prices online, and receive payments through mobile financial services. Small business owners are increasingly depending on digital banking and online transactions to manage operations more smoothly.
At its core, smart living is not only about access to technology; it is also about being prepared for uncertainty. People today are becoming more aware that one unexpected event, such as a medical emergency, an accident, or a sudden loss of income, can quickly disrupt years of hard work. As lifestyles evolve, the way people think about protection is changing too.
This growing awareness is encouraging many Bangladeshis to explore insurance in a more modern and accessible way. What was once considered complicated and time-consuming is gradually becoming simpler through digital platforms and app-based services.
For many individuals, choosing insurance has become part of a smarter approach to life. It allows people to move forward with greater confidence, whether they are starting a business, supporting a family, or investing in their future. A farmer expanding operations, a shop owner opening a second outlet, or a young professional planning long-term goals all benefit from knowing that one difficult moment will not completely derail their progress.
This mindset also supports entrepreneurship and economic growth. When people feel more protected, they are often more willing to take meaningful steps towards improving their lives. Small businesses grow stronger, families feel more secure in their decisions, and communities become more resilient overall.
In many ways, smart living is about reducing everyday stress and creating room to focus on what truly matters. Technology has already made life faster and more connected. The next step is ensuring that people can continue living lightly, even when life becomes unpredictable.
Smart living today is also about choosing services that are simple, transparent, and convenient. With the wave of smart living expanding to every sphere of life, people increasingly expect financial services to be as smart and easy as the apps they use every day. Currently, digital transactions account for Tk 9.23 lakh crore, or 34.59 per cent of total value, indicating one-third of the total transaction volume. When it comes to insurance products, people prefer purchasing insurance policies through a mobile app, keeping their policies completely paperless, and tracking every stage of their claim process without unnecessary hassle.
Digital platforms are gradually making this possible, allowing customers to buy insurance, manage policies, and monitor claim updates directly from their smartphones. This shift is helping transform insurance from something complicated into something accessible and practical for everyday life. For instance, Guardian Life Insurance Limited settles 90 per cent of its group insurance claims and 60 per cent of retail and other insurance policy claims digitally.
Many companies are helping make their services more approachable through simpler digital experiences, keeping up with the ongoing wave of smart living. Because in the end, living smart is not just about keeping up with the future; it is about being ready for it with confidence.
