DU relieves Sudip Chakraborty of duties in wake of Mimo’s death

The University of Dhaka has relieved Associate Professor Sudip Chakroborthy of all academic responsibilities in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies following the death of student Munira Mahjabin Mimo

In a press release issued last night (27 April), the department said Chakraborty has been removed from all academic activities, including classes and examination committees, after his arrest in connection with the incident.

The decision was taken at a special meeting of the department’s academic committee held on Sunday (26 April).

According to the statement, “Munira Mahjabin, a student of the MA 2nd semester [2024 session] of the department, has left us all in shock with her untimely death. Following the incident, Associate Professor Sudip Chakraborty was arrested by law enforcement authorities. As a case has been filed, he has been sent to jail.”

It further said, “The academic committee has decided that Sudip Chakraborty will be relieved of all academic activities, classes, and examination committees of the department until the legal process is concluded.”

Yesterday  (27 April), a Dhaka court denied bail to University of Dhaka associate professor Sudip Chakroborthy in a case over the alleged instigation of a student’s suicide and sent him to jail after a hearing.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order after the accused was produced before the court by Sub-Inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station, who also sought his detention.

The case stems from the death of Munira Mahjabin Mimo, whose hanging body was recovered from her residence in North Badda.

A note found at the scene mentioned the accused by name and referred to money and personal items, according to police. Following the incident, a case was filed against Chakroborthy on charges of instigating suicide.
