For Bangladesh International Tutorial (BIT), education extends beyond academic results. Since its establishment in 1983, the institution has sought to develop independent thinkers, confident communicators and responsible individuals equipped to navigate an increasingly complex world.
Founded by the late Ms Lubna Choudhury, BIT has built its identity around academic excellence, strong values and the holistic development of students. More than four decades later, the institution continues that legacy under the leadership of her daughters, Ms Anika Rahman, a Princeton University alumna with a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University, and Ms Talita Choudhury, a Mount Holyoke College alumna who holds a master’s degree in education from The City College of New York.
The institution’s approach combines an internationally recognised academic curriculum with opportunities for students to explore interests, develop practical skills and take on leadership roles.
BIT follows the Pearson Edexcel International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and International A Level curriculum, providing students with an academic pathway towards higher education in Bangladesh and abroad. Alongside classroom learning, the institution places emphasis on extracurricular engagement, recognising the role these activities can play in developing creativity, teamwork and confidence.
Students can participate in activities spanning arts, culture, sports, environmental awareness, media and coding. These opportunities allow them to pursue interests beyond their academic subjects while developing skills that can prove valuable in further education and professional life.
Debate and Model United Nations (MUN) form another part of BIT’s approach to student development. Through these programmes, students engage with global issues, conduct research, practise public speaking and learn to construct arguments, negotiate and consider perspectives different from their own.
BITMUN, the institution’s Model United Nations initiative, gives young delegates an opportunity to simulate international diplomacy and discuss issues of global significance. Such activities encourage students to examine complex questions, communicate their positions and work towards solutions through discussion and negotiation.
Physical development is also part of the institution’s educational approach. BIT offers a Wushu martial arts programme designed to build fitness, concentration, resilience and self-discipline. Its facilities include extensive martial arts courts, alongside opportunities to participate in football, basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sporting activities.
The institution operates four campuses across Uttara and Gulshan, offering students access to learning environments designed to support academic and extracurricular pursuits. Among these facilities is its 17-bigha Uttara campus, which features a nine-bigha open field, modern classrooms, science laboratories, libraries and sports facilities. The campus also houses a 1,000-seat auditorium for events and other activities.
Access to appropriate facilities can help broaden the educational experience, providing space for students to engage in scientific exploration, physical activity, cultural programmes and collective initiatives beyond regular lessons.
BIT’s international curriculum and emphasis on student development are reflected in the higher education destinations of its graduates. Former students have progressed to institutions including Johns Hopkins University, the University of Michigan, the University of Washington and Mount Holyoke College, among others.
For students and families considering international education pathways, preparation involves more than meeting academic requirements. Communication, critical thinking, adaptability and the ability to engage with people from different backgrounds are also important. BIT’s combination of classroom instruction, extracurricular activities and leadership programmes is intended to help students develop these capabilities.
The institution also offers merit-based scholarships and financial assistance to eligible students and families, seeking to support access to education for those who qualify.
As education continues to evolve, schools face the challenge of preparing students not only for examinations and university admissions but also for the responsibilities and uncertainties of adult life. BIT’s educational philosophy centres on balancing academic achievement with personal growth, discipline and a sense of responsibility towards society.
This approach reflects the institution’s longstanding motto, “Serve the Nation” — a principle that places service and social responsibility alongside individual achievement.
As it moves forward under its current leadership, BIT continues to build on the legacy established by its founder, with an emphasis on helping students develop the knowledge, confidence and values needed to pursue opportunities and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
