The Department of English at BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) organised a seminar on Begum Rokeya on 17 December 2025 at the university’s Multipurpose Hall, bringing together faculty members, officers, students, researchers and invited guests.

The seminar reflected on the legacy of Begum Rokeya, the eminent Bengali thinker, writer and educator widely regarded as a pioneer of women’s liberation in Bangladesh and India. Discussions focused on her intellectual and social contributions, particularly her role in shaping progressive thought among Bengali Muslims.

Renowned scholar and public intellectual Prof Dr Salimullah Khan delivered the keynote lecture titled “Begum Rokeya and the Bengali Muslim Spirit”, highlighting her philosophical vision, reformist ideas and enduring influence on society.

The programme included a welcome address, an introduction of the keynote speaker, and a speech by Prof Dr Engr Ayub Nabi Khan, Acting Vice-Chancellor of BUFT, who emphasised the importance of engaging critically with the works of pioneering figures such as Begum Rokeya to inspire contemporary scholarship and social awareness.

The seminar concluded with the presentation of souvenirs to the keynote speaker, followed by a photo session. The event reaffirmed BUFT’s commitment to academic excellence, critical inquiry and the promotion of progressive intellectual traditions.
