Australia raises student visa fees, making study abroad more expensive for international students

International students planning to study in Australia will now have to pay significantly more for their visas after the Australian government announced another increase in application fees.

The fee for a Student Visa (subclass 500) has risen from AUD 1,600 to AUD 2,000, marking a 25% increase. Charges for Temporary Graduate visas, which allow international students to remain and work in Australia after completing their studies, have also been increased.

The new fees came into effect on 1 July, as part of the Australian government’s broader migration and budget measures.

The move has drawn criticism from universities and education groups, who argue that higher visa costs could discourage talented students from choosing Australia at a time when global competition for international students is intensifying.

Australia had already doubled its student visa fee from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600 in 2024. With the latest increase, it now has one of the world’s highest student visa application charges.

The government says the additional revenue will help strengthen the country’s migration system and support budget priorities. However, education sector representatives warn that rising costs, combined with tighter visa policies, may reduce Australia’s appeal as a study destination.

Australia remains one of the most popular destinations for international students, particularly those from countries including India, China, Nepal and Bangladesh.
