A total of 397 students from seven schools and learning centres in remote areas of Khagrachhari have received chalk and slates under an initiative to support education among underprivileged children.

The programme was implemented by Elevating Society for Skill Development (ESSD) with support from the corporate social responsibility (CSR) fund of DBL Ceramics Limited. The educational materials were distributed from 26 to 28 July across Khagrachhari Sadar, Matiranga and Panchhari upazilas.

ESSD Director (Management, Programs and Finance) Shadman Bin Samad and Program Manager Farhan took part in the distribution activities.

According to ESSD, many students in the hill districts face difficulties accessing basic learning materials because of geographical barriers and limited infrastructure. Despite poor road connectivity, long travel distances and water shortages, local educational institutions continue to provide basic education to children.

Under the initiative, 83 students of Uttar Ganjpara Non-Government Primary School, 73 students of Rabidhan Para Non-Government Primary School, 92 students of Daldali Asha Haphnong Non-Government Primary School and 99 students of Adarshagram Anwara Begum Talimul Quran Madrasa received educational supplies. Students from the East Domdompara Centre, Domdompara Centre and Santalpara Centre in Panchhari were also included.

During field visits, the ESSD team found that reaching some schools required travelling along narrow, unpaved hill roads using local jeeps and motorcycles. Rabidhan Para Non-Government Primary School is located nearly 10 kilometres from the nearest marketplace.

The organisation also identified water scarcity as a major challenge in the area, with some families travelling between seven and 10 kilometres to collect drinking water. The situation becomes more difficult during the monsoon, when heavy rainfall damages roads and disrupts transport.

ESSD said it plans to continue education and community development initiatives in remote hill areas to expand learning opportunities for disadvantaged children.
