BOU cancels Meherpur exam centre over copying allegations
Bangladesh Open University (BOU) has cancelled the Kazipur Degree College examination centre in Gangni, Meherpur, and expelled seven students following allegations of open copying during an English examination.
The university announced the measures after reports on the alleged irregularities during its BA and BSS Examination 2025 were published by several media outlets on 28 and 29 August, according to a press release.
BOU has designated Gangni Mohila Degree College in Meherpur as the new examination centre.
The university said preliminary findings indicated that negligence by officials and invigilators at the Kazipur Degree College centre had contributed to the situation.
Assistant Professors Md Habibur Rahman and Md Rafiquz Zaman, who served as invigilators at the centre on 28 August, have been permanently barred from duties related to BOU’s BA and BSS examinations.
The university accused them of neglecting their responsibilities and failing to take effective measures to prevent copying.
BOU has also formed a three-member high-level committee, headed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Professor Dr Anisur Rahman, to investigate the incident.
The committee has been directed to submit its report promptly. The university said anyone found responsible would face action under its regulations and prevailing laws.
“Bangladesh Open University follows a zero-tolerance policy towards copying and all other forms of examination malpractice,” BOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan said.
“Ensuring a fair and credible examination system is our highest priority. Any attempt to undermine the transparency and integrity of examinations will not be tolerated,” he added.
The vice-chancellor instructed all officials, employees, centre authorities and invigilators involved in examinations to perform their duties with the utmost vigilance, honesty and responsibility.
He also strongly condemned the reported assault on journalists covering the incident, expressed sympathy for them and wished the injured a swift recovery.
