A 16-member national team has been announced to represent Bangladesh at the 23rd International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO 2026), to be held in Depok, West Java, Indonesia, from 2 to 7 October.

Bangladesh will compete in mathematics and science with eight students in each category, following the country’s debut at the 22nd IMSO in Kedah, Malaysia, in 2025, where all 12 Bangladeshi participants won medals – two silver and 10 bronze – according to the press release.

The International Mathematics and Science Olympiad is an international competition for primary-level students.

The competition began in Indonesia in 2003 as the ASEAN Mathematics and Science Olympiad (AMSO). In 2011, the organisers decided to hold the competition outside Indonesia for the first time, expanding its international reach.

Bangladesh’s mathematics team comprises Arijit Saha, Md Nabeeh Hossain, Ehan Abrad Rahman, Md Samin Saif, Irtysh Zayed Liam, Sharaf Bin Anowar, Ali Omar and Md Shahid Morsalin, all students of St Joseph Higher Secondary School.

The science team comprises Tahmid Hasan of Manarat Dhaka International School and College; Avigyan Roy Golpo of SFX Greenherald International School; Raiyan Afrad of St Joseph International School; Shahabi Ibn Kabbo of St Joseph Higher Secondary School; Rafsan Shafiq Talukder of Bonowary Lal Government High School, Sirajganj; Arham Abid of Baseerah International School; Md Miftahul Islam of Mymensingh International School; and Mohammad Mushrif Alam of AG Church School.

Arijit Saha and Tahmid Hasan were also members of Bangladesh’s 2025 IMSO delegation and won silver medals in Malaysia.

The team was selected through the Bangladesh Mathematics and Science Olympiad (BdMSO) 2026.

The national round was held simultaneously in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet and Rangpur on 8 August, with hundreds of primary-level students participating.

Following the national round, selected students took part in an online national camp from 11 to 20 August.

The Team Selection Test (TST) was then held in Dhaka on 21 and 22 August to select the students for the Bangladesh delegation.

The mathematics selection test was held on 21 August, while the science selection test took place the following day.

A residential preparatory camp for the selected students was subsequently held in Dhaka from 15 to 18 September, featuring hands-on laboratory activities and problem-solving training.

The Bangladesh team is scheduled to leave Dhaka for Indonesia on 1 October and return home on 9 October following the competition.

BdOSN President and Bangladesh Country Coordinator for IMSO Munir Hasan will lead the Bangladesh delegation as team leader.

He will be assisted by Deputy Leader Md Tanvirul Islam, Science Mentor Mim Naz Rahman and Mathematics Mentor Samira Sumaia.

Speaking about the objectives of BdMSO, Munir Hasan said, “Our goal is not rote learning, but to spread the joy of mathematics and science among young students, nurture their curiosity, and build their capacity for logical thinking.”

BdMSO 2026 is jointly organised by the Society for the Popularisation of Science, Bangladesh (SPSB), Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) and Masslab.
