Keanu Reeves is set to reprise his role as John Wick in an animated prequel that will explore the assassin’s past, focusing on the events leading up to the first film.

The film will follow Wick as he undertakes the legendary Impossible Task to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with his love, Helen.

The project will bring back the production team behind the live-action franchise, including Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Reeves. Point Grey will also join as a producer.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Shannon Tindle, known for Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings, will direct the film. Ryan and Kaz Firpo, who previously worked on Marvel’s Eternals, are attached as screenwriters.

The animated prequel was first announced last year. Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson said the Impossible Task was one of the stories fans were most eager to see explored, adding that Tindle’s interpretation offered exciting possibilities for the franchise.

The animation studio behind the film has yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, the franchise is also moving ahead with a fifth live-action instalment, despite the fourth film appearing to offer a conclusion to Wick’s story. Announced in April 2025, John Wick 5 is being developed with Reeves and Stahelski involved.

Stahelski previously confirmed that a script was in development, with writer Mike Finch also working on the project. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said the team had a promising story but was still working to ensure it would deliver a satisfying continuation.

Beyond the films, Reeves is also set to return as John Wick in an upcoming video game from Saber Interactive. The title is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, although a release date has not yet been announced.

The game is expected to feature the franchise’s signature gun-fu combat, cinematic action, driving sequences and familiar environments, allowing players to step into the role of the assassin.
