Butex Environmental Club marks Earth Day with ‘Plastic Exchange’ campaign
The Environmental Club of Bangladesh University of Textiles organised an innovative awareness campaign titled “The Plastic Exchange” on campus, marking World Earth Day.
The initiative encouraged students to exchange two pieces of plastic waste for a plantable eco-pen, a biodegradable pen designed to be planted in soil after use, allowing it to grow into a sapling.
The campaign attracted strong participation from students and members of the wider campus community. The first 100 participants received eco-pens as part of the initiative, which was held under the slogan “Let’s Make Butex Greener Together.”
Organisers positioned the event as a practical alternative to conventional Earth Day observances such as rallies and marches, focusing instead on actionable behaviour change and sustainability.
Participants and faculty members noted that the campaign not only promoted responsible plastic waste disposal but also fostered greater environmental awareness among students. Organisers expressed hope that similar initiatives could be replicated across other university campuses in the future.
