JU launches basketball club, announces founding leadership
Jahangirnagar University has marked a new chapter in its sporting landscape with the official launch of the Jahangirnagar University Basketball Club (JUBC), alongside the announcement of its founding leadership.
Mohammad Ifrat Amin Okkhor, a student of the Department of Statistics and Data Science (50th batch), has been appointed President of the club, while Nabila Sultana from the Department of Management (51st batch) will serve as General Secretary.
The club’s founding members include Fahim Tajwar Sharfee (Finance and Banking, 47th batch), Shahanur Rahman Sanju (Philosophy, 48th batch), Devjani Bhattacharjee (Finance and Banking, 47th batch), and Raif Rahman (Fine Arts, 48th batch).
The Vice Presidents are Walid Hasan, Sabikun Nahar Poly, Purabi Sarkar, and Jannatul Ferdousi. The Joint General Secretaries include Iqbal Hossain, Ishtiaq Bin Iqbal, and Ayitijho. An executive committee has also been formed, comprising members from the 50th to 54th batches.
The initiative aims to institutionalise the university’s long-standing legacy in basketball, creating a structured platform to support athletes and promote the sport on campus.
The club operates under the guidance of Professor Shariful Huda of the Department of Geography, serving as team manager, alongside Coach Azmal Amin Tutul, Deputy Director of the Physical Education Department. Their leadership has played a key role in establishing the club’s organisational framework.
Speaking about the initiative, the newly appointed president emphasised the importance of strengthening sports culture at the university. He noted that basketball has long been an integral part of campus life and expressed a commitment to building an inclusive environment where both indoor and outdoor sports receive equal importance.
Through this initiative, the club aims to nurture talent, preserve its sporting heritage, and create new opportunities for student-athletes at Jahangirnagar University.
