SAU celebrates Pahela Baishakh 1433 with traditional festivities
Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) celebrated Pahela Baishakh 1433 with a day of traditional festivities and cultural activities, reflecting the deep connection between Bengali heritage and agrarian life.
The celebrations began on 14 April 2026, with Vice-Chancellor Md Abdul Latif inaugurating the programme in front of the Faculty of Agriculture building by releasing balloons and pigeons.
In his address, he highlighted the historical significance of the Bengali calendar as an agricultural calendar and emphasised the importance of farmers in Bangladesh’s economy. He also referred to initiatives such as the “Krishok Card” programme, noting its role in supporting farmers and improving market access.
The event was attended by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Md Belal Hossain, Treasurer Md Abul Bashar, along with faculty members, administrative officials and students.
A colourful procession followed the inauguration, showcasing traditional elements of the Bengali New Year. The formal session, presided over by Professor Moha. Ashabul Haque, Director of the Student Counselling and Guidance Division, included speeches highlighting the importance of preserving cultural identity.
The afternoon featured a cultural programme with performances of music, dance, poetry and drama by students. A Boishakhi fair, organised by 24 student clubs, added to the festive atmosphere, offering traditional food items and showcasing student creativity.
The celebration concluded with an award ceremony recognising the best-decorated and most well-organised stalls at the fair.
