Jaya Ahsan files petition against horse meat trading
Actor and animal welfare activist Jaya Ahsan, alongside two welfare organisations, has filed a public interest writ petition with the High Court seeking an immediate ban on the illegal trade of horse meat.
Filed yesterday, the petition follows a disturbing discovery in November 2025, when authorities raided an illegal slaughterhouse in Gazipur. Contaminated meat from severely diseased horses was allegedly sold to unaware consumers disguised as beef, posing a grave threat to public health.
With previous appeals to relevant ministries reportedly ignored, the petitioners are now demanding a time-bound investigation and strict legal action against the culprits. Furthermore, the writ requests the formulation of national guidelines within 60 days to halt the auction of confiscated horses and establish dedicated sanctuaries to rehabilitate rescued animals.
