IUB alumnus Prof Osama Khan appointed vice-chancellor of University of South Wales
Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) accorded a reception to Professor Osama Khan, an alumnus of the university’s School of Business and Entrepreneurship (SBE), following his appointment as the next vice-chancellor and chief executive of the University of South Wales, UK.
The reception was organised by IUB’s Career Guidance Placement and Alumni Relations (CGP&AR) Office on December 22, 2025.
Professor Khan, who will assume his new role in May 2026, is the first academic of Bangladeshi heritage to be appointed to the top leadership position of a public university in Europe and North America. He completed his bachelor of business administration from IUB in 1999, graduating as valedictorian with a double major in finance and economics. He is currently serving as deputy vice-chancellor (academic) at Aston University, UK, and holds academic degrees from the University of Cambridge, Lancaster University, and the University of Surrey.
The event was attended by Didar A Husain, chairman of the Board of Trustees of IUB; trustee Dr Husne Ara Ali; Vice-Chancellor Professor M Tamim; Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Daniel W Lund; along with faculty members, senior officials, and alumni.
In his remarks, Professor Khan reflected on his academic journey, saying IUB played a defining role in shaping his career. He credited the university for his higher education, first job, and mentorship that guided him along his professional path.
Recalling IUB’s early days, Didar A Husain said Professor Khan and his family had placed their trust in the university when it was still in its formative stage, adding that his achievements make the entire IUB community proud.
Professor M Tamim described Professor Khan’s journey as an inspiration for aspiring academics and leaders, noting that his success reflects the impact of dedication and perseverance.
During the programme, trustees and senior officials presented Professor Khan with an IUB-branded sash, crest and alumni identity card. The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, dinner and cultural performances.
The programme was moderated by Al-Zawad Islam Shadman and organised by Farjana Hafiz, assistant director, and Mukta Rani Nath, assistant career counsellor, CGP&AR.
