The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has filed an official complaint with Fifa over the refereeing in Egypt’s 3-2 defeat by Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, local media reported on Tuesday.
Egypt surrendered a 2-0 lead in the final 15 minutes before losing the knockout match, which was officiated by French referee François Letexier.
The EFA’s complaint centres on several refereeing decisions, including a goal disallowed after a VAR review and a late penalty appeal involving Mohamed Salah that the association said was not reviewed, says CairoSpots.
The association also questioned the disciplinary record from the match, noting that Egypt received five yellow cards while a member of the coaching staff was sent off. Argentina finished the match without any bookings.
According to the EFA, it had formally objected to Letexier’s appointment before the match.
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan was also booked during the game after making what the EFA described as an anti-racism gesture toward the referee.
Fifa did not immediately comment on the complaint.
