The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has appointed Thomas Dooley as the new head coach of the national team, replacing Javier Cabrera ahead of next month’s friendly against San Marino.

In a press release the BFF said: “We look forward to appointing Thomas Dooley as the new head coach of the Bangladesh men’s national team.”

Dooley represented the United States National Team, playing in the 1994 World Cup and captaining the team in the 1998 World Cup. He later served as Assistant Coach under Jurgen Klinsmann from 2011 to 2014.

He guided the Philippines to an unbeaten AFC Asian Cup qualification and their highest-ever FIFA ranking. Most recently, he served as head coach of Guyana, winning all four matches under his charge.

A dual US-German citizen, Dooley enjoyed a distinguished 16-year Bundesliga career as a defender and midfielder, winning the German league title with FC Kaiserslautern in 1991 and lifting the UEFA Cup with Schalke 04 in 1997. Internationally, he earned 81 caps for the United States and was later inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

After retiring as a player, Dooley became the first American to manage a professional European club with FC Saarbrücken. He also held coaching and technical roles in Malaysia (Sri Pahang FC) and Vietnam (Viettel FC), helping Viettel secure a league title.
